Exciting Updates to the Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification Program

Creating a safe and efficient aquatic facility is essential for providing a positive experience for all users while ensuring their well-being. NRPA’s Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification course is the most advanced training in swimming pool operations and provides in-depth instruction on all facets of aquatic facility operation and management. Becoming an AFO shows your commitment to excellence in the field and your contribution to providing safer, more enjoyable swimming experience for everyone in your community.

NRPA is proud to announce new material for the AFO certification program was recently released on October 1. This includes the AFO Manual (8th edition), course PowerPoint, exam, and a new course offering — the AFO Blended Learning Course.

Further, as NRPA continues to strengthen our culture and practices around diversity, equity and inclusion, we are pleased to share that the AFO exam also will soon be available in Latin/American Spanish.

Considering taking the next step in your career and becoming an AFO? Check out the various options available to you:

AFO Blended Learning Course and Exam (NEW)

This course is a combination of the AFO Online Learning Course, an in-person training with an AFO Instructor, with the exam administered at the end.

  • AFO Online Learning Course: Six modules totaling seven hours of learning.
  • In-Person Instructor Training: One day of in-person training with an AFO Instructor.
  • AFO Exam: This is a written exam consisting of 50 questions and you will have three hours to take the exam. Exam results are provided immediately.

AFO In-Person Course and Exam

This is a comprehensive two-day training course with an AFO Instructor, with the exam administered at the end of the second day.

  • In-Person Instructor Training: Two days of in-person training with an AFO Instructor.
  • AFO Exam: This is a written exam consisting of 50 questions and you will have three hours to take the exam. Exam results are provided immediately.

AFO Virtual Course and Exam

This is a comprehensive two-day virtual training course with an AFO Instructor, with the exam administered at the end of the second day. This course is administered through the NRPA online learning platform and Zoom. A webcam is needed to be on video during the course and exam. 

  • Virtual Instructor Training: Two days of online training with an AFO Instructor.
  • AFO Exam: This is a written exam consisting of 50 questions and you will have three hours to take the exam. Exam results are provided immediately.
