“Can we say something about the power of empowerment? So many of these older adults come to the table with a life filled with different skills and professions. That really puts them in a great position to lead programming, build programming and mentor others.”

Research shows that intergenerational programs have multiple benefits for everyone involved , including an increased feeling of belonging among both younger and older participants, and an improved quality of life, particularly for those with dementia. Older adults benefit from meaningful social connections while younger generations benefit from the experiences of older adults and form more positive attitudes toward older adults. These programs create mutually enriching relationships that strengthen community bonds and support well-being across generations.
NRPA has developed a Healthy Aging Framework to help park and recreation agencies leverage their strengths, relationships and resources to advance systems change approaches that support healthy aging. The framework is grounded in a health equity lens and focuses on including all generations and people to build social and intergenerational connectedness through parks and recreation. It is intended to meet park and recreation agencies where they are and provide suggestions, guidance and examples from the field that highlight effective and equitable healthy aging approaches.
Within the framework, you’ll discover how Apex Park and Recreation District in Colorado is addressing the unique needs of the “Sandwich Generation” — middle-aged adults balancing care for both their aging parents and their children. You also can explore the inspiring story of a polar plunge event in Wisconsin, where participants of all ages come together to raise funds for Special Olympics athletes while enjoying an adrenaline-filled experience.
Whether you’re interested in case studies showcasing effective older adult programming, research on the value of intergenerational connections, or actionable strategies to promote healthy aging, NRPA’s Healthy Aging Framework provides a comprehensive tool. It equips park and recreation agencies with resources, guidance and real-world examples to advance health equity and foster intergenerational connectedness in communities across the nation.
