Parks and Rec, Community Members Join Forces for Family Volunteer Day

(November 17, 2017)

Volunteer projects are part of the national Meet Me at the Park healthy living program

Ashburn, Va. (Nov. 17, 2017) — On Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, park and recreation professionals from Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, will team up with local families as part of Family Volunteer Day, a global day of service that celebrates the power of families who volunteer together. In these communities, children and families will give back by providing assistance with park projects that are part of the Meet Me at the Park healthy living program — a program developed by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company.

In Chattanooga, Tennessee, volunteers will gather at Sterchi Farm Park where they will participate in the removal of trash, graffiti and invasive plants, as well as fence staining. These activities are part of an upcoming project to build a new adventure trail at the park. The new nature-based trail will provide exercise, play and adventure for everyone.

Likewise, volunteers in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, will gather at Cacapon State Park where they will spread mulch and put the finishing touches on a new nature-themed playground. The first of its kind in the park, the new playground features a variety of inclusive play equipment with many safe options for sliding, crouching, climbing and fun.

Twenty-five park and recreation agencies and cities nationwide are participating in the Meet Me at the Park healthy living program. As part of the program, all 25 participants received grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 to support projects that increase access to play spaces in local parks for children and families. This investment supports NRPA and Disney’s combined goal of providing 1 million kids and families with greater access to play.
