January 2017:  Keeping up with a regular fitness routine is tough, especially during the winter months. However, staying physically active year round is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle overall and more people are taking the benefits of regular exercise seriously. January’s Park Pulse poll finds 80 percent of Americans are making an effort to stay physically fit during winter.  Through programs like Commit to Health, Park Prescriptions and Walk with Ease, park and recreation agencies are helping people of all ages improve their overall health throughout the year.

Key Findings

Four in five Americans make an effort to be physically active during the winter

  • Walking, jogging, running, and hiking outdoors is the most popular winter physical activity among Americans regardless of location within the country
  • Parents with children in the house were more likely to make an effort to stay active over the winter as opposed to non-parents (87 percent vs 75 percent)
  • Over half (52 percent) of baby boomers preferred walking/running over any other physical activity in winter
